Virgin mojito aka virgin mohito recipe | how to make restaurant-style non-alcoholic virgin mojito drink

Restaurant-style Virgin mojito aka Virgin Mohito is always in high demand among non-alcoholic drinkers or Mocktail lovers, right? Just like, whenever I am in a fine dining restaurant, always order 2 drinks, one plain virgin mojito(non-alcoholic) & the other one mojito, punched with any fruity mocktail. However, this highly demanded bit pricy non-alcoholic mocktail is easy to make at home just in 6-7 mins.

About this recipe

What is Virgin Mojito? Virgin mojito aka Virgin Mohito is a sugary concoction of lime juice & fresh mint mocktail drink, punched with soda water or white lemony soft drinks(sprite/7 up/limca) & served with lots of ice cubes. Virgin Mohitoto is traditionally made by gentle muddling of 3 ingredients; lemon wedges, mint leaves, & sugar, however, I make this mojito mocktail in a different way.

The term “Virgin” is used to describe no alcohol(prepared without alcohol) and “Mojito” is a lemon mint drink with soda. However, only Mojito aka Mohito describes as an alcohol-based drink because of adding white rum/Vodka. Although the basic ingredients of mojito & virgin mojito drinks are the same – lemon, mint, sugar & soda.

Originally Mojito(aka Mohito) was prepared with sugar cane juice punched with lemon & mint leaves used as relief of upset stomach as well. However, later it became a popular refreshment drink and was mixed with alcohol before serving. To differentiate between these 2 drinks named Mojito(with alcohol) & virgin mojito(without alcohol).

You must have heard in restaurants, Virgin Mojito is pronounced as Virgin Mohito. Both are the same actually here “J” sounds “H”. Like Mojito became Mohito, Jalapeno sounds Halapeno, etc.

Except for plain soda water, mainly sprite/7 up/ mountain dew like white soft drinks are used in virgin mojito to make it delicious & refreshing as well. It works as a refreshing cooling agent at any time especially when you are in a relaxed mood.

Difference between Mojito(Mohito) & Virgin Mojito(Mohito)

In the traditional way, the mojito is an alcohol-based drink where white rum is working as the primary ingredient. Whereas virgin mojito means without alcohol mojito, that is why except alcohol other ingredients are the same in both drinks. If I’m not wrong mojito’s virgin version was invented for those non-alcoholic people who don’t consume alcohol but really want to enjoy the drink.

Why do I make this drink?

So now come to the exact reason for making this drink today.  Actually, after a long time, the weather is shining today and as a result, the temperature is a little bit high and I decided to quench my thirst with this fabulous drink. Though I think I shouldn’t make any excuse for making this drink as I have a serious craving for a virgin mojito. Easy to make at home just by following a few simple steps.

Twist & trick of this recipe

But here is a twist, today I’m going to share my version of making Virgin mojito(not using the traditional way. As you know, in the traditional way, muddling is mandatory. However, my process is a little different from the traditional one but taste-wise it’s awesome. Instead of muddling lemon & mint, my trick is to give a little crush on these 2 by shaking them with some ice cubes but without using a cocktail shaker.

Generally, in restaurants, a cocktail shaker is used for crushing the ingredients. However, I will make it without a cocktail shaker. Even I will show how easily you can make a cocktail shaker at home just with the help of 2 glasses. I used 2 stainless steel glasses where one must be taller and wider than the other.

My virgin mojito story

My virgin mojito(aka virgin mohito)-making story lies 8 to 9 years back when I was watching a food-related tv show. There a bartender was making mojito by using a cocktail shaker with lemon wedges and ice cubes together. And I loved the idea of making mojito and starting making my virgin mojito recipe by following that bartender’s method. But I didn’t have the cocktail shaker, so I apply the trick of using this 2-glasses method. And it wonderfully worked in my kitchen.

Virgin mojito(Virgin Mohito) is a sugary concoction of lime juice & fresh mint mocktail drink, punched with soda water or white soft drinks & served with lots of ice cubes. The traditional way of making this drink is a gentle muddling of 3 ingredients; lemon wedges, mint leaves, and sugar.

Ingredients for 1 glass

  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar

  • 1 medium lemon

  • 8-10 pcs Fresh mint leaves

  • 8-10 pcs ice cubes

  • 225 ml sprite/7 up/limca(any white soft drink)/ plain soda water

  • Equipment required
  • 1 tall & 1 medium stainless steel glass

  • Or 1 mocktail shaker

  • For garnishing
  • 2 sprigs of fresh mint leaves

  • a  lemon slice

Instruction

  • Preparation
  • Wash the mint leaves(8-10 pcs), 2 sprigs of fresh mint, and lemon(1 medium-sized).
  • Cut the lemon into half, squeeze one half of the lemon to get juice(about 1 tsp juice extracts), and cut another half into 4 equal pieces. Keep it aside.
  • Take a small blender jar and blend 2 tbsp granulated sugar into a fine powder.
  • Making Virgin Mojito
  • Take a tall steel glass, put 4 equal pieces of lemon, 8-10 mint leaves, and 3-4 ice cubes into it.
  • Fix another medium steel glass(upside down) into that tall steel glass, works as an instant shaker.
  • Secure that medium glass perfectly to make sure, the liquid part of the ingredients should not come out while shaking.
  • There should not be any gap between these two glasses.
  • The medium glass will act as the lid of this instant shaker.
  • Hold the glasses with your both hands and start shaking for about 20-22 times which takes hardly 10-12 secs.
  • Inside this instant shaker(glasses), the ice cubes will act as a crusher. Due to the shaking, ice cubes will crush the mint leaves and lemon wedges and remove their extract. Now Keep it aside.
  • Because of shaking ice cubes will also gently melt down and will be mixed with the lemon-mint extract. This way you’ll get the fresh flavor of lemon and mint together in this drink.
  • Keep the lemon-mint extract in the instant shaker(or stainless steel glass) until start assembling this drink.
  • To assemble the Mojito, take a tall mocktail glass, add 2 tbsp powdered sugar, and 1 tsp lemon juice(extracts at the beginning of this recipe) with 1 ice cube.
  • Mix all well with a spoon until sugar perfectly melts down.
  • Now strain the lemon-mint extract straight into the Mocktail glass and give it a nice stir.
  • Add 4-5 ice cubes to the mocktail glass and lastly fill the glass with sprite/7 up (any white soft drink) or plain soda water.
  • Restaurant-style virgin mojito aka virgin mohito is ready. Garnish it with mint sprigs and sliced lemon.
  • Stir it once before taking a sip of this wonderful drink.

Notes

  • The mouth of this medium stainless steel glass should perfectly fit into the long wide mouth glass to secure the ingredients while shaking. Otherwise, the liquid part of the ingredients will easily come out through the gap between these two glasses.
  • If you are using soda water instead of sprite/7 up/ mountain dew then can add more powdered sugar.
  • Here I’ve used powdered sugar according to my taste. If you feel it’s tangy or sweet, can add more or less sugar to it.
