Restaurant-style Virgin mojito aka Virgin Mohito is always in high demand among non-alcoholic drinkers or Mocktail lovers, right? Just like, whenever I am in a fine dining restaurant, always order 2 drinks, one plain virgin mojito(non-alcoholic) & the other one mojito, punched with any fruity mocktail. However, this highly demanded bit pricy non-alcoholic mocktail is easy to make at home just in 6-7 mins.
About this recipe
What is Virgin Mojito? Virgin mojito aka Virgin Mohito is a sugary concoction of lime juice & fresh mint mocktail drink, punched with soda water or white lemony soft drinks(sprite/7 up/limca) & served with lots of ice cubes. Virgin Mohitoto is traditionally made by gentle muddling of 3 ingredients; lemon wedges, mint leaves, & sugar, however, I make this mojito mocktail in a different way.
The term “Virgin” is used to describe no alcohol(prepared without alcohol) and “Mojito” is a lemon mint drink with soda. However, only Mojito aka Mohito describes as an alcohol-based drink because of adding white rum/Vodka. Although the basic ingredients of mojito & virgin mojito drinks are the same – lemon, mint, sugar & soda.
Originally Mojito(aka Mohito) was prepared with sugar cane juice punched with lemon & mint leaves used as relief of upset stomach as well. However, later it became a popular refreshment drink and was mixed with alcohol before serving. To differentiate between these 2 drinks named Mojito(with alcohol) & virgin mojito(without alcohol).
You must have heard in restaurants, Virgin Mojito is pronounced as Virgin Mohito. Both are the same actually here “J” sounds “H”. Like Mojito became Mohito, Jalapeno sounds Halapeno, etc.
Except for plain soda water, mainly sprite/7 up/ mountain dew like white soft drinks are used in virgin mojito to make it delicious & refreshing as well. It works as a refreshing cooling agent at any time especially when you are in a relaxed mood.
Difference between Mojito(Mohito) & Virgin Mojito(Mohito)
In the traditional way, the mojito is an alcohol-based drink where white rum is working as the primary ingredient. Whereas virgin mojito means without alcohol mojito, that is why except alcohol other ingredients are the same in both drinks. If I’m not wrong mojito’s virgin version was invented for those non-alcoholic people who don’t consume alcohol but really want to enjoy the drink.
Why do I make this drink?
So now come to the exact reason for making this drink today. Actually, after a long time, the weather is shining today and as a result, the temperature is a little bit high and I decided to quench my thirst with this fabulous drink. Though I think I shouldn’t make any excuse for making this drink as I have a serious craving for a virgin mojito. Easy to make at home just by following a few simple steps.
Twist & trick of this recipe
But here is a twist, today I’m going to share my version of making Virgin mojito(not using the traditional way. As you know, in the traditional way, muddling is mandatory. However, my process is a little different from the traditional one but taste-wise it’s awesome. Instead of muddling lemon & mint, my trick is to give a little crush on these 2 by shaking them with some ice cubes but without using a cocktail shaker.
Generally, in restaurants, a cocktail shaker is used for crushing the ingredients. However, I will make it without a cocktail shaker. Even I will show how easily you can make a cocktail shaker at home just with the help of 2 glasses. I used 2 stainless steel glasses where one must be taller and wider than the other.
My virgin mojito story
My virgin mojito(aka virgin mohito)-making story lies 8 to 9 years back when I was watching a food-related tv show. There a bartender was making mojito by using a cocktail shaker with lemon wedges and ice cubes together. And I loved the idea of making mojito and starting making my virgin mojito recipe by following that bartender’s method. But I didn’t have the cocktail shaker, so I apply the trick of using this 2-glasses method. And it wonderfully worked in my kitchen.

- If you are using soda water instead of sprite/7 up/ mountain dew then can add more powdered sugar.
- Here I’ve used powdered sugar according to my taste. If you feel it’s tangy or sweet, can add more or less sugar to it.

And by “Lemon” you mean “Lime”…all pictures show a lime which is what’s traditionally used in this recipe
Yes, “Lemon means lime”, actually, we Indians commonly say “lime as a lemon”.
