Dahi Chicken is a chicken curry recipe made with yogurt and a few simple ingredients. This chicken curry recipe is also popular as dahi wala chicken in North Indian cuisine and Doi murgi in Bengali cuisine. This chicken curry goes best with Plain rice, Pulao, Jeera rice, roti, chapathi, paratha, or garlic naan.
For making dahi chicken, chicken is first marinated with well-beaten yogurt or curd and lime juice both make the chicken soft and juicy. I make this chicken curry in vegetable oil. First, temper the oil with bay leaves & whole garam masala. Then the chicken is made of fried onion, garlic, green chilli, yogurt, and cashew nuts paste with black pepper, garam masala, and red chilli powder.
To make this chicken curry recipe, adding cashews to dilute the tanginess of the curd or dahi, and make a creamy white gravy. Yogurt and cashews also make a very less spicy gravy. Here I also used my homemade garam masala powder which also enhances the taste and flavor of this yogurt chicken curry recipe. That homemade garam masala is unique and made my dahi chicken different from other traditional Indian style chicken curry recipes which are also cooked with yogurt.
Dahi Chicken recipe is also named Doi chicken or Doi Murgi in Bengali cuisine. In West Bengal, dahi chicken has several local names, “Doi diye chicken curry” and “Doi diye mugrir mangsho” is a traditional Bengali style name. “Dahi” is a Hindi term and in Bengali, dahi means “Doi, here Tok doi” (an unflavoured no sweet yogurt or curd), and “Chicken” means “Murgi” in the Bengali language. This yogurt chicken curry is also a popular dish in Pakistan known as Dahi Murg / Dahi wala murgh in Pakistani cuisine.
